Space Warriors (2013) Synopsis :
Jimmy Hawkins (Thomas Horn, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) has always dreamed of traveling to outer space. The son of a retired NASA astronaut who lived on the International Space Station, Jimmy has lived and breathed astrophysics his entire life.When an opportunity arises to compete and win a seat on the next space shuttle, Jimmy desperately wants to apply. But Jimmys parents, Capt. Andy Hawkins (Dermot Mulroney) and Sally Hawkins (Oscar Winner Mira Sorvino) have strong reservations about their son becoming an astronaut.
Jimmy, knowing his parents would not approve, secretly applies to attend a special space camp at the Space & Rocket Center. The summer camp, run by tough but kind-hearted former astronaut, Col. Roy Manley (Josh Lucas), is designed to pull teens with scientific specialties from across the globe to create an elite team, The Warriors. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the plot was simpler than Iimagined. Before I watched the movie, the title made me cringe,suggesting that it was about teenagers battling aliens in a cheesyrampage through outer space. Clearly, I was wrong to judge a movie byits poster. "Space Warriors" is a fun and unexpectedly down-to-earthfilm for all ages.
Jimmy Hawkins (Thomas Horn, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"), theson of a retired NASA astronaut, is a complete astronomy geek. Hisdream is to go to space, and the opportunity arises in the form ofSpace Camp, where teams can compete for the chance to go to space. Hisparents, played by Dermot Mulroney and Mira Sorvino, forbid him to joinSpace Camp fearing for his safety, but Jimmy joins anyway. At SpaceCamp he meets the brightest, nerdiest group of astronomy-lovers, calledSpace Warriors. They have to learn to work together as a team not onlyto win the competition, but to save the lives of three astronauts alongthe way as well.
Colonel Manley (Josh Lucas), one of the commanders at Space Camp, isone of my favorite characters – he's witty and smart with just a touchof dry humor and sarcasm. Sean McNamara ("Soul Surfer") is the directorof "Space Warriors." Along the same lines of "Soul Surfer," this moviehas many great themes that include teamwork, leadership, overcomingfear, thinking outside the box, making wise choices and mostimportantly, it shines a positive light on youth. The Space Warriorsdon't let anyone look down on them because of their age – they prove tothe entire world that age doesn't matter as long as you have passion, alove of discovering, and an open mind.
The movie incorporates footage from history in outer space and was shoton-location at the Space Camp in Alabama. For science-lovers, thismovie is the ultimate "Easter egg" hunt, where geeks will want to shoutand announce to other viewers, "That's the actual footage of landing onthe moon!" or "I've been on a moon-gravity simulator just like that!" Ifound myself thinking that if I could go to a Space Camp that lookseven half as fun as the one in the movie, it'd be the best summer of mylife. I recommend this movie for all ages, especially for aspiringscientists. I give it four out of five stars. "Space Warriors" willinspire viewers to look up and rekindle an excitement for learningabout the unknown universe of space. Learn more about a world outsideour own that we've barely begun to discover.

I saw this at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. A decent museumwith a few interesting exhibits and some cool rockets and replicas.Unfortunately this museum also has movie theater where they chargeadditional money for films relating to space. The problem began whenthe attendant recommended "Space Warriors" to us because it was filmedon location at the Space and Rocket Center and in the greaterHuntsville area, and also told us, falsely, that it was 45 minuteslong.
As far as the movie itself goes, it is a complete mess of a film whichchanges tones for no apparent reason, can't decide whether it's a filmor a commercial for space camp and includes actual movie stars whowould rather be anywhere else (exception for Josh Lucas who actuallyseemed to be acting and enjoying chewing the scenery). This brings meto the films biggest problem, Thomas Horn. He plays the lead kid sowhiny, so annoying and as such a limp-wristed wiener that you can'tpossibly take anything in Space Warriors seriously (and it does makethe huge mistake of trying to be serious, especially in its third act).
There many moments of unintended hilarity in this move. First the "bad"kid from the other team is doing his absolutely best to imitate ValKilmer as Ice Man in "Top Gun." Second, the team is made up of acomplete Burger King Kid's club of stereotypes: nerdy Asian engineer,sassy black girl, Russian computer programmer - they're all here. Addin some WTF unintentional double entendre and you've got movie whoseonly value is to be made fun while watched Mystery Science Theaterstyle with a few cold ones.
